Graduate Student Assistant - The Department of Fair Employment and Housing is seeking graduate students for a part-time, remote-work position, assisting the Department with conducting a telephonic survey of California employers regarding their anti-harassment and diversity policies. The survey is an outgrowth of the Department’s Task Force on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment in the Workplace. Successful candidates for the position will be comfortable researching contact information for employers and conducting cold calls to reach the most appropriate person to speak to about the survey, and will be willing and able to develop rapport with those being interviewed. Staff Services Manager I (Supervisor) - The Department of Fair Employment and Housing is seeking an experienced manager and leader to serve as the Staff Services Manager I (Supervisor) (SSMI) of the Department’s Housing Investigations Team. The SSM I will manage staff who conduct investigations into complaints of discrimination. The SSM I will be responsible for monitoring the quality of housing investigation cases, performing review and providing feedback to the investigative staff. Civil rights honors program


The DFEH Civil Rights Honors Program is a highly competitive, one-year program for recent law school graduates and newly admitted lawyers who are committed to public service. Participants in the program will develop practical lawyering skills working with experienced DFEH attorneys in the investigation, mediation, and prosecution of civil rights cases brought by the Department on behalf of the people of California. Apply through March 19, 2018.

Summer honors program

The California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH), seeks law students with a passion for enforcing the civil rights laws protecting people in the most populous and diverse state in the country. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, but must be postmarked or emailed no later than: January 15, 2018. Click here for more details.

How to apply

To compete for a job opening at DFEH, new candidates need to take the following steps:

  1. Apply to the state of California (https://jobs.ca.gov) for the appropriate job classification and then take the necessary exam for that category (list below).
  2. Pass that exam and be added to a current employment eligibility list
  3. Check for current openings at DFEH (see box)
  4. If you are eligible for one of those jobs, submit a State Application Form (STD 678) and your resume (optional unless specified). Mail your application materials to:
