Civil rights honors program


The DFEH Civil Rights Honors Program is a highly competitive, one-year program for recent law school graduates and newly admitted lawyers who are committed to public service. Participants in the program will develop practical lawyering skills working with experienced DFEH attorneys in the investigation, mediation, and prosecution of civil rights cases brought by the Department on behalf of the people of California. 2019 program information forthcoming.

Summer honors program

The California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH), seeks law students with a passion for enforcing the civil rights laws protecting people in the most populous and diverse state in the country. 2019 program information forthcoming.

Student Internship and Externship Programs

It is the policy and practice of the Department of Fair Employment and Housing to provide educational and experiential opportunities to student interns and externs, and to appropriately recruit for, train, and evaluate all such students. How to apply

To compete for a job opening at DFEH, new candidates need to take the following steps:

  1. Apply to the state of California (https://jobs.ca.gov) for the appropriate job classification and then take the necessary exam for that category (list below).
  2. Pass that exam and be added to a current employment eligibility list
  3. Check for current openings at DFEH (see box)
  4. If you are eligible for one of those jobs, submit a State Application Form (STD 678) and your resume (optional unless specified). Mail your application materials to:
