Native American Heritage Month
|
In 1914, Red Fox James, a Blackfoot Indian, rode horseback from state to state seeking approval for a day to honor Native Americans as the first Americans. In 1915, the American Indian Association call for the observance of and President Calvin Coolidge issued a proclaimation for an American Indian Day. In 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 "National American Indian Heritage Month." Similar proclamations have been issued each year since 1994. The theme for this year's heritage month is "Celebrating Tribal Nations: America's Great Partners."
